New York based photographer, Ben Zank, tells us things while riding around on an unnecessarily tiny scooter on a Bushwick rooftop. Known for his surreal visuals and unlikely scenarios, Ben creates a world that makes normal reality feel boring in comparison.

BABOON:

Tell me your story.

BEN:

I got into photography when I was 18 after I found a Pentax ME Super in my grandmother’s attic. The rest will be in my memoir which you can pick up for $19.99.

BABOON:

When was a moment you decided to say ‘fuck it’ and take an unexpected path?

BEN:

I would say it was less of a ‘fuck it’ and more of a stubborn revolt against having to do what everyone else does. Things I feared in high school and college were working a 9-5, paying taxes, and paying rent. I’m happy to say at 26 years old I only have to do two of those things.

If you had 5 minutes to pack a Go-Bag and didn’t know when you were coming back, what would you pack?

BEN:

You want me to say camera, tripod, and some inspirational book. I’m way too disorganized to know what the fuck I’m going to do with five minutes.

What’s the ultimate location?

BEN:

Wouldn’t we all like to know that.

BABOON:

Where can we find you on a Friday night?

BEN:

At home playing video games.

Tumblr or Reddit? 

BEN:

Reddit. I can easily spend an hour with askreddit while on the toilet.

BABOON:

If you had to only listen to one song for the next month what would it be?

BEN:

I’d probably just listen to nothing? I’ve gone 2 months without listening to any music at all. It sucks, but I do it sometimes. Why? I don’t know.

BABOON:

What’s the magic word?

BEN:

Subtlety.

BABOON:

Hotel room or tree house?

BEN:

Tree hotel?

BABOON:

Plane, train, automobile?

BEN:

Plane.

What’s the best prop?

BEN:

Something that doesn’t hold too much context. That would give you a lot of variety when using it. A bad prop would be a sign that is advertising chicken soup.

BABOON:

Is there a question I forgot to ask?

BEN:

Of course.

BABOON:
