New York based photographer, Ben Zank, tells us things while riding around on an unnecessarily tiny scooter on a Bushwick rooftop. Known for his surreal visuals and unlikely scenarios, Ben creates a world that makes normal reality feel boring in comparison.

BABOON:

Tell me your story.

BEN:

I got into photography when I was 18 after I found a Pentax ME Super in my grandmother’s attic. The rest will be in my memoir which you can pick up for $19.99.

BABOON:

When was a moment you decided to say ‘fuck it’ and take an unexpected path?

BEN:

I would say it was less of a ‘fuck it’ and more of a stubborn revolt against having to do what everyone else does. Things I feared in high school and college were working a 9-5, paying taxes, and paying rent. I’m happy to say at 26 years old I only have to do two of those things.

BABOON:

If you had 5 minutes to pack a Go-Bag and didn’t know when you were coming back, what would you pack?

BEN:

You want me to say camera, tripod, and some inspirational book. I’m way too disorganized to know what the fuck I’m going to do with five minutes.

BABOON:

What’s the ultimate location?

BEN:

Wouldn’t we all like to know that.

BABOON:

Where can we find you on a Friday night?

BEN:

At home playing video games.

BABOON:

Tumblr or Reddit?

BEN:

Reddit. I can easily spend an hour with askreddit while on the toilet.

BABOON:

If you had to only listen to one song for the next month what would it be?

BEN:

I’d probably just listen to nothing? I’ve gone 2 months without listening to any music at all. It sucks, but I do it sometimes. Why? I don’t know.

BABOON:

What’s the magic word?

BEN:

Subtlety.

BABOON:

Hotel room or tree house?

BEN:

Tree hotel?

BABOON:

Plane, train, automobile?

BEN:

Plane.

BABOON:

What’s the best prop?

BEN:

Something that doesn’t hold too much context. That would give you a lot of variety when using it. A bad prop would be a sign that is advertising chicken soup.

BABOON:

Is there a question I forgot to ask?

BEN:

Of course.

BABOON:

What’s next?

BEN:

More photos, probably.
