We spent the day with New York based artist Brielle Jenkins and at the Natural History Museum, because, science. Brielle is extremely talented & boundary-pushing, while simulatneously being one of the kindest humans we've ever met. We ended up talking about the elephants in the room.

BABOON:

Tell me your story.

BRIELLE:

I’ve loved art since the beginning. When I was little, I used to draw a lot of dogs, horses and sunsets. I still have a few of those drawings and they are epic. One of them features a small Brielle on a horse jumping straight into the ocean. Practical? No. Majestic? Fuck yeah.

I remember getting in trouble for doodling in school. I think the teachers thought I wasn’t paying attention, but it really helped me stay present. In high school, I ate lunch in the art room. It was a real safe place for me. I remember I used to paint fake tickets to pep rallies and give them to my friends. I wasn’t much of a rule breaker so that made me feel like a badass.

Undergrad was when the real art shit popped off. I had a great crew of art friends and we were always smoking weed and doing absurd performance pieces. I really miss those days. I think that’s when I really accepted the fact that I was going to be an artist. Grad school was fun too. It’s still weird for me to say that I have an MFA. I don’t like a lot of the work that I made there, but I think I’ll appreciate it as time goes on. Now, I’m making art in Brooklyn. Art is lyfe? Yeah, art is lyfe.

BABOON:

When was a moment you decided to say ‘fuck it’ and take an unexpected path?

BRIELLE:

Haha, I don’t think I’m capable of ‘fuck it’ moments. I’m too stubborn. I will literally stay on the wrong path just because I chose it.

BABOON:

If you had 5 minutes to pack a Go-Bag and didn’t know when you were coming back, what would you pack?

BRIELLE:

My dog, my leather pants, crop tops, toothbrush, candy, a few photos, jewelry, laptop, boar skull, phone charger, teapot, and my camera.

BABOON:

If you had to pick one, who would you take on a road trip Rihanna or ASAP Rocky?

BRIELLE:

Omg, this is such a tough question. I’d probably take Rihanna because we all know girl trips are more fun.

BABOON:

Where can we find you on a Tuesday afternoon?

BRIELLE:

None of my days are consistent in NYC. I could literally be at an art show or at home eating hot Cheetos.

BABOON:

Digital or analog?

BRIELLE:

Oooo both are important. Digital. No, analog. Wait, no, digital.

BABOON:

Public or private?

BRIELLE:

Private.

BABOON:

If you had to only listen to one song for the next month what would it be?

BRIELLE:

Beautiful by Mariah Carey (ft. Miguel)

BABOON:

Plane, train, automobile?

BRIELLE:

I like them all for different reasons. Plane, if I’m going somewhere tropical. Train, if I’m going somewhere woodsy. Automobile, if I’m going to the club.

BABOON:

Most recent photo on your phone?

BRIELLE:

Hah, It’s a yellow ‘watch your step’ sign glowing in the sun. centered

BABOON:

Where do you draw inspiration from?

BRIELLE:

So many different things since I’ve moved to New York. Some of which include subway stops, street fashion, sexy people, Instagram, my friends, my body, fabric, and delicious sushi. Anything can be an inspiration if it makes you feel something.

BABOON:

What’s next?

BRIELLE:

MAKE THAT SHMONEY! But really, I just want to make the work I want to make and get paid for it. What is cooler than thriving through living out your passion?!?!?!
