@lpx

Lizzy's career is impressive and makes us feel a bit inadequate. She co-founded the indie label Neon Gold Records while she was still in college, started the pop-duo MS MR, and is now on a solo project called LPX. We discussed Things at her Brooklyn apartment, please enjoy.

BABOON:

What’s your story?

LIZZY:

I’m born and raised in London. Moved to the states for College. Started my own record label, Neon Gold, out of my dorm room at Vassar during the end of my Sophomore year with my best friend Derek. We’ve since released singles/EPs/and or albums from artists such as Christine and the Queens, Marina and the Diamonds, Ellie Goulding, Haim, Tove Lo, Charli XCX to name just a few. I’m also one half of electro-pop duo MS MR and most recently working on a rock/pop solo project as LPX.

BABOON:

When was a moment you decided to say fuck it and take an unexpected path?

LIZZY:

I feel like I’ve only ever jumped head first into every decision in my life, personal and professional. My friend Maggie likes to say, “it’s either fuck yes, or hell no,” and I take that shit to heart.

With Neon Gold it was the moment Derek (my best friend and business partner) sent me Sleepyhead by Passion Pit. It was always our childhood dream to start a record label and when we heard that song and discovered that band we were so excited we decided to start NG right then and there and learn our lessons along the way! We just had to go for it.

With MS MR, Max and I had been making music for ourselves in secret for about a year. I was running NG at the time and Max was in school to be a dancer. Eventually we were so proud of the music we decided to release an EP anonymously on bandcamp and just see what might happen… We were immediately met with a huge sweep of love from the internet and music industry. As soon as we felt that support we saw there was genuinely space to give into our dreams and so Max left dance school and I found a way to do both the label and be an artist.

As LPX, after two MS MR albums released worldwide through Columbia records and 6 years of near non stop touring, I decided I needed (as both an artist and human being) to do something on my own. I jumped off the moving train that was MS MR to do something for me to grow as an artist. I’m self funding and self releasing the whole project and it’s absolutely rooted in a “fuck it, just do it” mentality.

BABOON:

Can you tell us about one of your favorite adventures or your ideal adventure?

LIZZY:

Tour has always been my favorite, best and ideal adventure. An opportunity to travel the world, meet new people, explore new cities, find the best vintage, discover new food all alongside your best friends. But the best part is performing my music to a new audience every night and getting to live out my dreams as an artist. It’s my favorite thing in the world.

BABOON:

If you had 5 minutes to pack a Go-Bag and didn’t know when you were coming back, what would you pack?

LIZZY:

As someone who loves clothes as much as I do, packing “light” is a real challenge. But in this fantasy excersize of picking up and going I would bring a pair of Levis, my favorite vintage t shirt that I stole from my brother when I was 10, my Malin Landau vintage boots, a bathing suit, a journal and my LA Kawaii hand painted motorcycle jacket (one of my most prized possessions). Everything and anything else can be purchased along the way.

BABOON:

What’s the magic word?

LIZZY:

I’m more about action.

BABOON:

What’s something that most people don’t know about you?

LIZZY:

That I absolutely adore Duane The Rock Johnson

BABOON:

If you could take one person with you to the Moon who would it be?

LIZZY:

I think maybe I just accidentally already answered that question lol

BABOON:

What artists are you listening to right now?

LIZZY:

There is SO MUCH good music out right now. I’m obviously obsessed with the current NG roster: Your Smith, Broods, Matt Maeson etc. But outside of that I adore Amen Dunes, Hayley Coupon, Kacey Musgraves, Young Fathers, Helena Deland and Miya Folick… to name a few.

BABOON:

Where’s the best vintage shopping?

LIZZY:

My New York go-to’s are: Malin Landau, Horizons, 10ft Single and Narnia.

BABOON:

What’s the best type of light?

LIZZY:

Full moon moonlight

BABOON:

How would you describe the color red?

LIZZY:

Powerful - it always gives me strength and confidence. It makes me feel like a low key/high key everyday superhero

BABOON:

What’s next?

LIZZY:

I’m off to Australia for a traveling festival called FALLS where I’ll be playing over New Years and into early January. And I’m preparing a sophomore EP coming out top of the new year that I can’t wait to share… from there sky's the limit.
